Please buy my book

Hello,

I've done a book. It's a book about stuff from here, and stuff from other blogs. It has old blogposts and new chapters, including one called "Life after newspapers" and one called "Hastily cobbled together chapter on phonehacking", to try and seem more up-to-date than it really is. It's 214 pages long, and it has a picture of the monkey on the cover. What more do you want? It's £9.93 and you can get it from Lulu. Click here.

I don't really do begging very well, but here goes: Please buy my book. It's not about the validation or the vanity; I need the money. I hope that you will love it very much, as much as I enjoyed writing it and putting it all together.

Thanks

Steve.

  1. Ceiliog wants to know if he’s in it.

  2. I’ll try to buy it on payday, and I’ll link it from my blog tonight.
Some advice from a fellow self-publisher:

Get on Kindle. I make more than twice as much money selling $5 ebooks on Kindle with a 70% royalty than I do selling £10 paperbacks through lulu . Other ebook formats are nice to do as well, but won’t solve any of your financial problems. Kindle sales have now overtaken print sales on Amazon, and I think by itself the Kindle accounts for something stupid like 10% of all book sales. And publishing on the Kindle is ridiculously easy – just upload your book as a Word document at http://kdp.amazon.com .

Sell hardbacks as well. Some people will buy them. Some people will buy both hardback and paperbacks (I know one person who bought one of my books as hardback for his collection, a paperback to read, a second paperback to lend, and a Kindle copy. There will be at least a couple of people who want to do that for your book).

Go through all the blogposts you’ve used in the book and stick a header on the top – “this essay appears in my book Musings Of A Monkey in a revised form, along with others you’ll like. Buy it here!” or something. Having that on my posts gets me a few sales each month.

    • Thanks for the advice, which is much appreciated. I hadn’t thought of going back to blogposts and mentioning the book on them – good idea. I will get around to the Kindle bit in due course, and I’m hopeful it’ll do OK on there as well. But I have always dreamt of having a book, and now I have one. It’s rather fun.

  3. Bought, keep writing :)

  4. I would definitely prefer a kindle version – just to give some feedback. I love that you have done a book. HOORAH!

  5. Makes David Attenborough’s books seem natural.
    Buy it!

  6. Bought! Worth it for the cover alone. =)

  7. Will buy it next week, when I’ve got a tiny bit of money again.

  8. o.k. Seeing as you did not reply to Daley, I have ordered a copy.
Now can you do me a favour?
There’s a commenter on the South Wales Evening Post website who wants to prove that cats don’t exist by placed them in the Large Hadron Collider. I think that this is unfair to the people at CERN. Can you advise?

    • Well, firstly thanks for getting the book – much appreciated. I don’t think putting cats in a giant collider would be good for anyone, least of all the cats. And it would run the risk of smashing cats together with such force that it created a giant uber-cat that would run amok through Switzerland, attacking cuckoo clocks. It could be carnage.

  9. “It’s not about the validation or the vanity; I need the money. ”

    I translate as:

    “I am a journalist”.

But yes. As the Cabinet Minister said of his Secretary, I might.

    Or can I have a review copy :-) ?

  10. I think I have to after that…Your publicist could not have done a better job. *wipes a tear* I just bought it for my Kindle…..Cheers

  11. Just ordered one.
    Keep at it.
