This is not a post about Johann Hari
Yes yes, eventually. But not right now, all right? I'm going to try and actually do a half-decent job of it rather than cobbling together a load of old crap. This isn't Bobby Moore nicking the necklace, for Christ's sake. We'll get over it. But yes, I'll write about it, once I've read enough around it. You know, to try and do a good job of writing an article rather than wading in with some ill-thought-out kneejerkery. "Why start now?" I hear you mutter, testily, at the back. See me at break time.

as I am not part of the “media moral maze” and just gawp in wonderment at its fundament (*stifled snigger*) I don’t know who Johann Hari is. Should I approach google with trepidation? or should I await the consider judgement of SB?

ok so I couldn’t resist and I googled it. Interesting. The frenzied comments fields are reminiscent of bate being chucked into shark infested water. It may be advisable to stand back and consider, lest one gets nipped….

Perhaps you could interview him?
Johann leans forward, serious for a moment. He fixes his eyes on mine and says, “I stress: I have only ever done this where the interviewee was making the same or similar point to me in the interview that they had already made more clearly in print.”

It was an emerald bracelet he didn’t nick. Yeah, I’m that old.

Come on! I’m waiting to disagree with you, how can I formulate my views without hearing yours first so I can think the opposite?

“Thoughtful consideration of evidence may prevent a future u-turn.” D. Cameron.
Ok. I Lied. He didn’t really say that.

If he had said “In previous interviews, they have stated a centrist opinion”, that is not plagiarism IMO. Even if he does not acknowledge the source of the opinion he is reporting
If he is using quotes from an earlier interview he himself had done, that is also not plagiarism, although the interviewee may take exception if they no longer had an opinion he was implying was current to them.
If he is using unacknowledged quotes from another source, even if it is because his interview did not contain the concise-enough quote, it’s dodgy for two reasons. First, he should have asked the right questions to obtain the quote, and second, he should just not report that something was said that way when it wasn’t.
Johann Hari would be quick enough to rail against somebody else in the same pickle…just saying.
