Beware the evil Milistalin!
The Mail has a rather tedious article today trying to link Ed Miliband with Stalin:
His cousin was close to Stalin's daughter? Why that's almost an imperial line of succession from the evil one straight to the Labour leader!
There's even a picture of Miliband and Stalin next to one another, to emphasise the horror heritage of the leftist supremo:
Eek! Be afraid - be very afraid. He's not just someone who has slightly left-wing views on some subjects; he's also pretty much Stalin's heir!
Imagine that, though. A picture of someone next to an evil dictator. If only there was one that existed of, say, Daily Mail owner Jonathan Harmsworth's great-grandad and Hitler...?
Ah, wait a minute, there is.
Just as with Lembit Opik's relatives and Nick Clegg's foreign blood, this is the latest in a line of stories in the Mail emphasising politicians' foreign backgrounds. Just as before, there's a whiff of something a little unpleasant about it all. We've all got embarrassing relatives - not all of them called Hitler 'my dear Fuehrer,' I grant you - but there's just something that makes you wonder why on earth this is important. Is it an attempt at a smear? Is it just to associate Miliband and Stalin? Is that all there is to it? It's pretty feeble, if so.
*update* Thanks to Chris Brosnahan for providing the following venn diagram which perfectly illustrates the complex relationship between Red Ed Miliband and Joseph Stalin:
I think that clears everything up...

For the Daily Mail to simply call her a “cousin” of Ed’s hides just how distant her relation is. Here’s a quick family tree to show how “close” Ed is to Sofia Miliband.

Good point. Also, that website is ace.

Let me be the first to say it.
A picture of a man with a legacy of spreading fear and hatred of foreigners. And he’s standing next to Hitler.

i can’t really remember, but wasn’t stalin’s daughter rather estranged from her father?
i’m sure we can find dodgy links for everyone if we could really be bothered.

Svetlana Alliluyeva (aka Stalina) defected to the USA in 1967 which just goes to show how much of an evil pinko commie she is.

Nick Clegg’s foreign blood has a lot answer for.

Just when you think the Mail has reached a pinnacle of idiocy it does this. You couldn’t make it up!

Not that it hurts your point but isn’t that the 1st Lord Rothermere: the great grandfather of the current one?

Good spot. Amended.

I like Venn diagrams.
If I didn’t already know the Daily Mail has zero sense of humour, I’d seriously wonder if they were sending themselves up with this sort of nonsense.

No I don’t think they are. It’s a kind of trick with human psychology. People will read it and go away with a distorted version of the facts, that emphasises the ‘moral’ of the tale no matter how unjustified: Miliband is Stalin’s cousin, or something similar.

I’m sure they can do better than that. That’s more than 6 degrees of separation, isn’t it? Or are you allowed to jump straight from Ed Milliband to his second cousin twice removed?

According to the Oracle of Bacon:
Joseph Stalin was in Universal Newsreel (1945/XIII) with Anthony Eden.
Anthony Eden was in “Biography (1961) {Winston Churchill: The Final Victory} with Queen Elizabeth II.
Queen Elizabeth II was in The Children’s Party At The Palace (2006) (TV) with Zoe Salmon.
Zoe Salmon was in This Week (2010-07-22) with Ed Miliband.
Though you could skip Zoe Salmon by going for the State Opening of Parliament…

Is this the same Daily Mail that ran a headline in 1934 saying:
“Hurrah for the Blackshirts” ?
I think we should be told.

Huh! Even for the Daily Mail, that’s piss-poor journalism, and scraping the barrel at best.

Apparently the Mail wants us to fear Judeo-Bolshevism.
