Mail Day, part 9: Here’s the bit I liked most

There's a certain kind of thing that the Mail is rather good at, particularly in paper format. And I'm not talking about spitting venom at single mothers. No, I'm talking about the rather interesting but ultimately pointless picture article. And here's the one in my dead-tree Mail:

Look at that! It's ace. Loads of old photos. Brilliant.

No, seriously, this is the best thing the Mail does. Better than any other paper. It has a certain charm to it. You could say a certain pointlessness and newslessness about it as well, but I think that's not quite fair. This kind of thing genuinely interests me. I can't help wondering if, again, this is the kind of thing that the internet does rather a lot of now, sharing fun and interesting stuff in a way that newspapers perhaps never really did, but which the Mail still does, a bit. Again, it might seem a little outdated, but I did enjoy it very much.

This and the adverts, my two favourite bits of the Mail. I still want the fumble-proof off switch! And I want it now! No fumbling!

  1. Quite a lot of local newspapers have this kind of feature. Apparently this type of old photos feature is a major boost to sales. It’s saying something that the best way to sell a newspaper these days is through 100 year old ohotographs.

    • You’re right, Guano; nostalgia.
      That’s summat else the UK press can use to sell copies, but always thought the more attractive pics. were ones from, say 1950 until the mid seventies.
