Is this weird or not?
This is how I count to five, using the fingers of one hand. It might not look weird at first, but... well, you'll see.

Now, if you haven't just gone "What the rodgering bumwipe is that?" then I assume this is completely normal, and we can proceed to five.
5.
See? Perfectly normal, no?
Well, I'd always thought so, but apparently not. The way I do 4 is the mark of Satan, or something. I mean, really? Is it that weird? I can't count four using the ring finger - it just juts out rather feebly rather than springing into place like the other fingers.
Am I weird or something?

Yes, you are weird.
But that’s why we like you.

Impressive independence of movement between ring and little fingers. But yeah it’s definitely quite weird.

Not as weird as your extra-bendy thumb joint. Mine are like that too, and (according to an ex who liked that sort of thing) so are Christoper Lambert’s.
Also, make a GIF of your counting style, please.
p.s. The site, from the deadly serious to the light-hearted, is superb.

it’s certainly unusual. reminds me of that very peculiar running joke in The Holy Grail where people get 3 and 5 muddled up. fwiw my (Bengali) parents count on their hands by pointing their thumb on the various “segments” of each finger, thereby being able to count to 12 on just one hand.

it’s logical but weird. upon reflection, it would make sense for me to do the same since i can move my little finger without moving my ring finger but not the other way round. however,I naturally try and count four without using the little finger. since i do it this way then my way must be the way normal people do it. therefore your way is weird.
p.s. maybe i should write for the express with that kind of logic? XD

It’s weird that you use your fingers to count. Even if you don’t know how to use Microsoft Excel, aren’t there internet sites for that sort of thing?

I think the politeness of comments so far reflects the huge respect people have for you Anton – but seriously – that has all just disappeared.
Two steps forward, one step back. Progress-ish-ism.
Do you miss out 9 on the other hand? Or miss out the correct finger for counting 9?
Anyway – and this is what worries me, why are you still counting to five with your fingers?

Unusual but more rational than the norm.

I count to 31 on one hand (or 1023 on both) using binary…

My thumbs are like that, only worse. Did you have a Sega Megadrive when you were younger?

My parents are Indian and use the segements on each finger to count as well…

Weirdo, your kind should be shot at birth.
The testing for this at birth may prove a little difficult. Therefore the only solution is to shoot all children at birth and everyone else just to be on the safe side.

I count like you do on my right hand, but the normal way on my left hand… Although I think I’ll be doing it the Bengali way in future, that’s immense. Although it can be improved, why not include the tip of your finger and then you can count to 16 on one hand?
February 21st, 2010 - 22:16
What? Why would you do that?
Why dammit Anton why?!
I count to 10 on one hand by going up to five putting up fingers then down in the same direction, so if I’m holding up my ring and index finger I’ve counted to 8. So much easier than using two hands…or not.
That Bengali count to 12 trick is good, I’m going to try that.

The problem is starting with the thumb. I do the thumb last so that I can use it to hold all the other fingers in place up until I get to 5.

I can’t comment on whether it’s weird or not, but I do the same thing. Why bother making life difficult for yourself for the sake of aesthetics, right? Substance over style.
