Welcome to the 1970s!
See what they've done there? See what they've done? He's a golfer and she's a woman, therefore she's A BIRDIE! Haha! Because women are birds, aren't they? But not just that, it's slightly beyond that. It's not quite enough to dehumanise her by calling her a 'birdie'; you've got to remember that she isn't worthy of being described as a human being. No, she's just a number. BIRDIE NUMBER ONE! Hilarious, no?
No...?
*update* I've also noticed the rather sad 'READ LITTLEJOHN' in the top right-hand corner. As if they couldn't think of anything else to say. Please read Littlejohn. Not 'hilarious Littlejohn' or even 'Richard Littlejohn' - just 'read Littlejohn'. It's the use of the imperative that's so starkly pathetic, almost like they're begging you.

And what about the word assault in commas?
What a horrific mess of a front page.

The main headline is typically meaningless too. It's not like my family were ever going to see that £40000, just like it doesn't see all the other millions of quid the Government spends on stuff.
It would be as meaningful a statistic if you took the total bailout cost and divided by the number of badger setts in the country.

Yeah, the Rolling Stone arrested does add to the whole 70's feel, although I assume the inverted commas are because it has not been proven in court.

What sad little person decided to put 'Birdie' in, eh?
I imagine that he (i don't doubt it was a he) probably thought woman, conveyed a sense of normality about her.(She had an affair with a married man, that's so sordid)
Woman is too normal, too average.
Slut was perhaps what was on his mind, but obviously he couldn't write that in a national newspaper. Birdie is somewhere in between. Perfect then……Not.
