Quote of the century
I love this BBC Have Your Say quote, featured on the ever-lovely Speak You're Branes:
Actually it really is scary, it’s not a case of “if we go on like this it’ll be 1984″ it’s here already! People in trouble for insulting our “beloved” leader (remember Splitting Image? Those days of freedom are long gone!)
Infact I’ll probably get arrested for this posting (sorry, I mean i’ll get a visit from social services, maybe they’ll take my children away?). Uh oh, I think I hear the thought police knocking on the door…. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU
Bianca Rowan, London, United Kingdom
There's not a great deal you can add to that gold-dust, is there? Except that you can not only insult our beloved leaders but also chuck green goo over their smug little faces. Childish? Yes. Hilarious? Of course. Just deserts for glibly ignoring public consultation and favouring huge corporate interests over democracy? Hell yeah. But anyway, here's custard-chucker Leila Deen explaining why she did it.
Those maintaining that reasoned discourse rather than goo-throwing is the way to have these things out should bear in mind that the kind of people who dominate such 'debate' in the national press are figures of the calibre of Richard Littlejohn and Melanie Phillips, people whose articles are the literary equivalent (or perhaps beneath the literary equivalent) of throwing something at someone. Here are their latest dribblings of nonsense chopped up into easy-to-vomit pieces.

If you've got time, have a look here for a pretty good analysis of Bernard Madoff. Capitalism gone crazy or just a shyster out to make a fast one? I tend to think the latter, with just bigger sums involved than with most confidence men.

And finally, here's a bit of an odd one. I'm not sure how much salt to take with this, but I'll present it here anyway. Imagine if a Muslim nutcase had been found with components and instructions to make a dirty bomb? Do you think there might have been quite an outcry? Well, what if a white supremacist did the same? ... is that tumbleweed?

The lack of coverage about white supremist reminds me of the BNP-supporting dentist in Lancashire who was discovered with the biggest ever arms cache in the UK.
Again, there was a complete lack of media coverage at the time; the only coverage occurred when the trail took place.
