This can’t be right

The BBC's Have Your Say messageboard is discussing whether ecstasy should be downgraded to a class B drug, following the considered advice of the advisory panel on the misuse of drugs and Jacqui Smith's "laa laa laa, can't hear you, drugs are bad mmkay" response.

It being HYS, I was expecting something like "Drugs are evil and blow up our children, these leftie do-gooders in the advisory panel should be flayed alive for our pleasure and then their lifeless corpses dragged through every town in Britain". But that just goes to show you have to keep an open mind. Because the most popular comment right now is:

Of course it should be downgraded. It should be legalised- it's less harmful than alcohol.
Everyone except the utter waste of space known as Ms J Smith MP seems to know this.
What's the point of having experts to advise if un-informed politicians are just going to do whatever the Daily Mail tells them they should do?

What...?! And then there's...

Are the government mad?. ignoring the experts because they dont say what the government want to hear, Any truth about hard drugs will now be ignored by those who take them, after trying ecstasy they will go onto the really dangerous drugs, thinking they are the same, as they are inthe same category, kids will now simply write off any dangers as Govt hype, and many more will die.

Blimey...

What a fantastic idea - lets all ignore the researched and informed advice of experts on the grounds of the "four legs bad, two legs good" reasoning. It makes life so much easier than actually thinking about these emotive and delicate subjects. While we are following this "thought" pattern, I would like to make 2+3=23, because this feels right too. Or perhaps it is time for us to re-examine some of our pre held misconceptions.

Very interesting. I've noticed this a couple of times, that HYS discussions that aren't about foreign policy or political correctness issues can actually be dominated by very liberal voices. Quite refreshing really. Although surely someone's going to blame the EU/Gordon Brown/the BBC for it all somewhere...?

  1. >> 2+3=23

It's common sense, and it sends the right message. A child of five could see it is right.

  2. I was as surprised as you – but even more surprised that the Daily Mail’s comments are equally reasonable (at least when you look at what’s been recommended):
