Enemies of Reason Poundshop potshots at the media moral maze.

What does the Mail want…?

The council official at the centre of the Baby P abuse scandal was finally sacked yesterday.
Haringey Council said Sharon Shoesmith was dismissed from her £100,000-a-year post with immediate effect and would not receive any compensation.
But she will still get her gold-plated civil service pension, estimated to be worth up to £1.5million.

So someone should have their pension taken away if they're sacked?

Did Mail columnist (and future Mail editor, if you believe the rumours) Piers Morgan have his pension taken away when he was sacked for fucking up at the Mirror?

Would Paul Dacre's utterly enormous final-salary pension, worth many millions, be taken away from him if he were to be sacked tomorrow?

Really?

  1. They can’t take her pension away because local authority pensions are funded, unlike the central civil service one which comes out of the Government budget.

That means that the money in it is hers; she paid it in contributions, rather than by accepting less salary in return for a pension from the Treasury.

It’s her money – they can’t take it away, just as if she had a private pension they couldn’t take that.
