Friday links 17/10/08: What’s this below the Stars and Stripes – a Jolly Roger?
The battered trilby's back: it's Greg Palast looking at why there might be reasons to be fearful about Barack Obama's hopes in the 2008 election. I don't really buy the argument that the 2004 vote was stolen, but this one could be, as they say in Switzerland, 'a different pair of trousers':

Speaking of the US elections, some more embarrassingly dreadful campaigning has appeared, with a joke food stamp depicting the candidate:
surrounded by a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken
Jesus wept.
Speaking of racists, let's have a look at the Mail. 5cc's back, and looking at 'White flight' in the Mail. Guess what? Some of the statistics have been manipulated, including counting 'white Irish' as 'white British'. Hmm, I can't help thinking that there might be some people who would be annoyed by that. Anyway:
Of course, in most immigration scare stories, some details get left out if they contradict the impression the paper's trying to give. In this one, the paper is scaring us by giving the impression that the white British population is dropping quickly, with this year being the biggest decline yet - while other ethnic groups are growing. Run to the hills!
Finally for today, a rather disappointing piece of news on Total Politics magazine, discovered by Tim at Bloggerheads:
Because I found out while making my initial enquiries that the political magazine Total Politics is not answerable to the Press Complaints Commission!
In fact the PCC had never even heard of the magazine until I called them. At all.
If there is a valid explanation for not subscribing to the PCC code, I would love to know what it is.

Because the PCC are worthless and you can only make a complaint if they specifically name you and call you a dog rapist and even then you’ll be lucky to get a ruling against them.
