Parasitic, conscienceless, poor-exploiting, vile loan shark bastard Patrick Kiely has been jailed for two years for ripping off those least able to pay, charging extortionate interest rates and generally being a scumbag.
But... doesn't that seem a little bit harsh? What had he actually done wrong?
He had denied running a money lending business without a licence.
Ah, I see. Naughty boy, not playing by the rules. If he'd been a parasitic, conscienceless, poor-exploiting vile loan shark with a licence, he'd've been fine. He could even have run tasteful adverts in the national press featuring beaming celebrities telling you that everything's going to be all right if you just take out another loan.
And of course if he'd done it on an even greater scale, he may have attracted 'calls for an inquiry by the FSA' from the chancellor, as there were this week over financial institutions which had exploited the poor by offering them loans of far much more than they could afford for ridiculously over-egged interest rates - and made a bit of a boo-boo in the process. And we all know that a ticking-off from the FSA is the equivalent of being flogged to death.
Poor Mr Kiely. His only mistake was the scale on which he conducted his vile business.
