HYS debate in ‘not full of nutcases’ shocker

When the dribbling armies of plankton who usually patrol the BBC Have Your Say messageboards can't get mobilised for a topic, you can sometimes find that reasonable, sane and even articulate posts reach the top of the charts, as opposed to the more expected "Get McBroon out! Nick Griffin for teh win!" nonsense that you see time after time.

Here's a case in point, a debate about Liberal Democrat tax plans. The rabid hatebots of HYSville couldn't get themselves organised to promote a particular agenda here - either that or they got so bored seeing the words 'Lib Dems' that they couldn't be bothered to write anything. So instead of the usual toss at the top of the most recommended charts, you see stuff like

Any party that will introduce a fair tax system to Britain will get my vote.
The super rich have been avoiding paying tax while
the lazy & feckless have been getting an easy ride for far too long.
This is why those of us who work for a living have been getting shafted for so much.
Lowering taxes for the middle/working classes would help the economy for everyone while reducing the burden on those people who are trying to take care of themselves & their family.
Ben platt, Liverpool, United Kingdom

What in the wide world of sports? Surely you're not trying to advocate the 'failed experiment of Socialism' or 'Stalinist economics' of taxing the super-rich slightly more? Blimey, a disgrace! Amazing scenes!

Yes I support them, the lib-dems are standing up for the working man, and they seem to be the only ones doing it. I want decent healthcare and I'm willing to pay the taxes. I just want to actually see something for it. Under labour my taxes have risen and I seem to get nothing for it. I don't want my money back, I want what I was promised in the first place: decent public services.
I'm not saying they're perfect. I like to think of them as the worst political party, apart from all the others.
Proud Lefty, Norfolk, United Kingdom

Eh...? What sorcery is this? How did 'Proud Lefty' get a BBC login? Doesn't (s)he know that you should call yourself "ENGLISH AND PROUD" and say your location is "ENGLAND (NOT EU)"?

I like this. I support any party who would make those WORKING on the lowest wages pay less tax, and subsidise it through a) not so many hand-outs to none workers and b)the super super rich.
Beth fiarweather

Astonishing stuff. Isn't it interesting that a lot of people think that taxing the rich more is a good idea? Not just hard-left nutjobs like me, either. People from all over the political spectrum do think that. It may not even be a bad idea. Who knows? Well, we'll never find out, anyway.

But there's always one to spoil the party:

The super Rich have earned their monies fairly and are entitled to it. If you tax them too much they'll do a Lewis hamilton and simply leave. If they all leave what happens to the economy then?
You ppl moan cos you have rubbish jobs that pay rubbish money cos you dont have an education, get an education and you might just make more than minimum wage and have the sense to understand the econimics behind wealth.
Infact the so called 'super rich' are prob the reason you're still surviving. T

I imagine that was probably typed up and sent in by someone's PA while a jowly cunt in a £500 tie stared out at the Gherkin, but I could well be wrong, as I frequently am. Anyway, it's been a reasonably er, reasonable debate, and that's always welcome.

  1. I thought the reason I am still alive was because farmers grow my food, because drivers transport it, because miners and oilmen and luberjacks drag natural resources from the wilderness, because nurses and doctors keep me healthy, because cleaners and binmen keep the environment clean…

Oh, and on and on. But I would have been writing until the tips of my fingers had eroded to bloody stumps before I got to; because rich gamblers play games in London. Not sure if I’d have got there before or after; because some rich person owns the truck, or the land being mined, or the hospital. But they’d have been close.

  2. There’s quite a lot of references to fewer ‘handouts’ to the ‘lazy’, ‘non-working’ and ‘feckless’ in those ‘reasonable’ posts…

  3. Hmm, I suppose there are a few of those in there. But it could be a lot worse…

  4. It could be a lot worse. Someone might listen to them and I won’t get my ‘handouts’ any more.
