Express and energy

The Daily Express has been taking a bit of a break from the usual Muslim-bashing and immigrant-hating, and has been concentrating on issues around the credit crunch (oh, if only it weren't so alliterative, it wouldn't be such a problem) such as soaring bills and the tax burden inflicted on us by Judas McStalin.

It also allows for a bit of mild (well, mild compared with the usual foaming hatred) xenophobia when you get a story like this one:

FRENCH ENERGY FIRM ‘RIPS OFF UK FAMILIES’

A French energy firm was accused yesterday of picking the pockets of British families.
The row followed the announcement of a French government plan to cap bill increases there at just 2 per cent for electricity and 5 per cent for gas.
The decision sparked a furious response from critics in the UK who claim Britons will be subsidising lower energy prices across the Channel.

The firm in question is EDF Energy, a bit of a tautology seeing as the E of EDF stands for 'Energie' and the 'DF' for 'De France'. How dare those uppity frogs allow their state-owned energy company to keep prices low in France while boosting them through the ceiling in Britain! Except:

Liberal Democrat energy spokesman Steve Webb said: “You have the incredibly hands-on French government dramatically capping bills and the British Government fiddling around the edges.”

Is this the Express really advocating renationalisation? I should cocoa. Maybe something else is at work here...?

Oh, look, there at the top of the Express website. What does that enormous banner advert say?

That's rather handy, isn't it?

And what's this little joker down the side of the page? It looks like a section of the Express website called 'CUT YOUR BILLS' but in fact it's a link that takes you here, to the USwitch website.

That's all rather convenient, isn't it?
